ATLANTA - A student from Georgia State says a thief stole her SUV from a valet and then used it to go across the Atlanta metro to a crime spree. Michael Seiden of Channel 2 learned that the suspect is the older brother of two men whose crimes ranged from theft to assassination before they were locked up.
Atlanta authorities say that while trying to get away from officers near Metropolitan Parkway and Fair Drive in southwest Atlanta, Charles McDaniel crashed the SUV of the GSU graduate. Seiden has been told by multiple sources near the investigation that McDaniel is a well-known gang member who has been in and out of prison for various crimes.
"I suspected something was happening, but then today I found out it was totaled," said the man, who asked not to be identified. Police retorted McDaniel was stealing her Audi from a Buckhead valet last weekend.
"The gentleman apparently came and stole from the valet box multiple sets of keys," the student replied. "His was there so he just hopped into it and fled." Atlanta police say the next week McDaniel raced the stolen car around Atlanta Metro, committing multiple violent crimes, including an attempted weapon attack in South Fulton City. It's there that police say McDaniel was robbing a BMW SUV and a team of suspects.
Court documents indicate police arrested him on multiple felony charges in Fulton County in April. A month before the arrest, McDaniel pleaded guilty to burglary in Cobb County by accepting an officer's stolen property and obstruction. It was all part of a plea agreement that held him out of prison.
