SOME AUSTIN CITY MEMBERS ARE SEEKING ADDITIONAL HEALTH AND FINANCIAL PROTECTION FOR HIGH-RISK WORKERS

Last week, local health officials announced that most new residents in Travis County who were catching corona virus are still going to job. The news has raised concerns among authorities and analysts about the "false option" regarding virus safety and economic security.

Dr. Mark Escot, the interim health authority of Austin-Travis County, said that most of the workers' infections occur in the construction, healthcare, and food markets—jobs that have been deemed vital since the start of Austin's emergency lockdown in March. This week, the Austin City Council will discuss a bill offering greater security of certain sectors who are most susceptible.

The campaign, led by the leader of District 4 City Council Greg Casar, is calling for the city to implement a system that guarantees that workers in the city support high-risk staff by providing telecommuting or a secure workplace environment.

The course also leads to linking all high-risk employees across the state to disability benefits and pandemic jobless assistance. It also calls on the city to ensure that financial help is provided for high-risk working people who are not qualified for State aid projects.
