The drainage system of New Orleans severely damaged
The official executive of the Sewerage and Water Board called the departure of a critical force-producing turbine “annihilating” to the city’s seepage framework during the board’s meeting.
As we enter the hurricane season, the drainage system of the city is severely affected as the crew has been unsuccessful in restoring the Turbine 5 from the time it was disabled in an explosion.
Ghassan Korban said that the agency could not afford the replacement currently as it is about $20 million. The plan of an additional $10 million using “Fair Share” tourism tax revenues also remains unsuccessful due to the pandemic.
Former Mayor went on spending $31 million to fix the 96-year old turbine instead of purchasing a new one for $16 million during the S&WB-passed opportunity during “Down the Drain” investigation.
Recently, 2.5 inches rainfall and lightning took out the power supply to three central drainage pumps in the Broadmoor neighbourhood and led to the loss of 20 megawatts of self-powered power. In the interim, the board endorsed another $4.8 million support work contract with JEI Solutions, an organization claimed by the sibling of the S&WB account executive.
S&WB extraordinary advice Yolanda Grinstead said Gee Cee recorded a brief controlling request in common court to attempt to hinder the agreement with JEI. Yet, it hadn’t been appropriately served or executed by an adjudicator, so nothing was keeping the board from supporting the agreement.

West-Nile-Virus-carrying mosquitoes detected in Tulsa
Authorities of the Tulsa Health Department (THD) confirmed the presence of West Nile Virus (WNV) in the mosquito samples collected from a trap in Tulsa County. As per WHO and the American Mosquito Control Association, there is no evidence that mosquitoes can transmit COVID-19, a virus that affects the respiratory system and spreads maximally via droplets when an infected person sneezes, coughs or talks. Mosquitoes can transmit viruses like WNV, and hence, people are recommended to use repellents containing DEET.
THD functions on an efficient budget to control mosquito populations by nationally-recognized mosquito surveillance programs which also helps to affirm the presence of mosquito-borne illnesses in the community. The target of the surveillance is to identify the presence of mosquitoes, to know its abundance, species, make a hazard appraisal, and give a premise to control. Control strategies incorporate larviciding and spraying when required. The mosquito surveillance has implemented new testing guidelines and is working to trap potential WNV positive mosquitoes as soon as possible. Every year since 2003, human cases of WNV disease are observed in Tulsa County. The virus infects human via mosquito bites, and the symptoms of this disease include headache, sudden onset of fever, muscle weakness and dizziness. Precautions to be taken are:
- Do not dump waste materials in stagnant water and drain out such items, so that mosquitoes do not get a place to breed.
- Use DEET containing, or CDC approved mosquito repellents.
- Ensure gutters are not clogged.
- Encourage people around you to dump and drain as well as use repellents.

Victim’s mother wants justice for her daughter’s brutal homicide
On 31st March, police discovered Anika Crane’s body, stuffed in her grey Ford Fiesta Sedan’s trunk at the intersection of Liberty Street and 159th Avenue, near a 7-convenience store, SanLeandro.
Her mother, Anita Cole, described her daughter as a people’s person, loving, kind and responsible, and thus when Crane missed her work for the first time, her mother felt suspicious. One week later, the officials found her abandoned car and her body stuffed it its trunk.
It was hard for the victim’s mother to accept the suspect arrested as he was the 35-year old victim’s 65-year old boyfriend. Initially, their relationship was not accepted by Crane’s family due to the age-difference, but out of love for her, they embraced the man. Jasmine Shivers, Crane’s cousin told that Crane had started a new job, bought the new Sedan and was talking to go out of Oakland. It seems that the boyfriend could not accept her independence and that if he cannot have him, nobody else can have her. The family told that Anika died due to blunt force trauma to her head and neck. It was a brutal homicide, her death was wrongful, and thus Cole wanted justice.
