A Vermont Downtown Mall Is a High School Now
The Downtown Burlington High School opened March 4, about six months after school administrators closed the existing school, just under 2 miles away, because toxic industrial chemicals known as PCBs were found in the building and soil during renovations. That left students stuck at home learning remotely for much of the school year during the coronavirus pandemic.
As school officials looked for space where students could attend school in-person, they eventually eyed the empty department store, which closed in 2018. They talked with architects and learned it was a possibility, said Superintendent Tom Flanagan.
The building underwent a $3.5 million retrofit supported by the state that added partial walls for classrooms while keeping some Macy’s remnants, like the sparkly white tile floors, bright red carpeting, and Calvin Klein and Michael Kors signs and a large-scale Levi’s jeans photo on a classroom wall. The library is housed in the former Macy’s china department, with books displayed on under-lit shelves, while the gym is in a former store’s warehouse and is still unfinished.

Go Corona Go
But are we letting it go!
The huge outbreak of virus named (covid-19) put an end to the normal life of people. The situation all over the world led to decline of economic growth. India being affected by the same, saw the peak in cases and then continued to declined followed by steep increase in cases from last few weeks. The ICMR DG listed three main reasons for the higher transmissibility of covid-19 laxity, covid inappropriate behaviour and various unidentified mutation. The question arises as who is to be blamed for the present condition of our country where everyone is fighting against the battle of corona virus.
The government and it's people both are simultaneously responsible for this severe condition. Blames elsewise will create nothing but an unnecessary misery and loss to the country and it's citizens as a whole. The blame game encourages states to manipulate data including finding ways to underreport Covid-19 infections and deaths.
Well starting with the events which took place in the past one year and are still taking place in this pandemic currently which is shocking and dreadful. For example, Farmer's protest, Anti CAA stir, Ground breaking ceremony of ram mandir, Ayodhya; all these events are equally responsible for the wide-ranging number of corona virus cases. Recently we heard about the massive gatherings of devotees at kumbh mela in UP, where the government and people both were negligent on their sides. Proper rules and procedures should have been implemented by government and duely followed by people in general. Measures like time slots should have been provided to people to perform their respective ceremonies, restrictions imposed on the people for dipping into the holy river, temperature checked before giving entry into the mela, only limited number of devotees allowed with social distancing and proper preacautions must have been followed but nothing of that sort come off.
With recent weeks seeing elections in four states, respective parties held densely packed rallies where wearing masks was a rarity.
Between all this increasing number of covid-19 cases the lockdown set of the most popular and powerful way to keep up with safety and leading to reduce the number of cases increasing in our country. Lockdown had adverse effects such as
Lots of people lost their jobs, middle man with everyday earning livelihood and the daily wage workers suffered high amount of loss, the shop owners, vendors (except essential item provider) and private job officials were forced to sit at home. The effects of lockdown on disease cannot and should not be looked at in isolation. They are interlink with its political and humanitarian effects, including unemployment, hunger, an unprecedented migrant worker crisis, and widespread loss of access to healthcare. These crises would have been averted or lessened with planning, but they are now an essential part of India’s lockdown story.
So When we model the national data in aggregate, we find both reduction in transmission and localisation of the disease have had an impact, testing the people from worldwide causes India to impose lockdown to reduce the number of covid-19 cases. The main criticism is that lockdown was a blunt instrument, poorly planned and implemented. This led to a lot of unnecessary misery which continues today . It also perhaps took attention away from other more sustainable strategies for disease control such as ramped up testing and tracing.
The vaccine shortage that is being talked about by many states, including Maharashtra, is a real problem. Many vaccination centres in the state had been temporarily shut because of the lack of vaccine availability. This will have severe repercussions, also giving the high number of new infections in the state.
Doctors and numbers of people are selling covid vaccines and oxygen cylinders in black even at this crucial time. The high demand and shortage of the same causing death of the patients who are paying heavy cost to save their lives.
While India has always been a significant exporter of vaccines, doing so at the cost of its own people was always bound to have serious consequences. This is one of the likely reasons that we are facing shortage. At the same time, Vaccines were not distributed evenly in maharashtra as being the most densely populated state, it has got the less shares of vaccines than the other states. Nonetheless Central Government has made decision for equal distribution of vaccines to respective states. In view of a sudden spike in demand due to the surge in covid-19 cases, India banned the export of injection remdesivir and Remdesivir Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) till the situation improves. The Central will allow the states to give vaccines to the people above 18 years of age from 1st of may. It quickly became apparent that to end this global crisis we don’t just need COVID-19 vaccines, we also need to ensure that everyone has access to them.
Maharashtra remains one of the worst affected states hit by the pandemic and in contrast, the government comes up with some effective strategies like in order to limit vehicular traffic on Mumbai roads and to allow vehicles related to essential services with more ease, the Mumbai Police has decided to implement a colour code to vehicles in the city amid Covid-19 restrictions. Along with this restrictive timing has been alloted to vendors to open their shops. New rules are prattling which says that only vaccinated shop vendors will be allowed to open their shops, companies have appointed tokens for vaccinating their respective workers, weekend lockdowns were imposed all over the states and in shortage of beds and space in hospitals, the temples have been converted into isolation or quarantine centres. The government steps up to tackle migrant crisis, labour ministry takes cognizance of migrants' movement and has set up 20 control rooms to address their grievances. The mistake made by the government was that it didn't implement all such protocols prior when rage was seen in cities like Pune, Amravati, etc. The central government being the highest authority should have taken such strong measures before and should not have shown this laxity towards nation's safety.
Scam related to negative reports got viral where people indulge in fake and negative reports just for traveling from one state to another. Even some doctors and laboratories are providing these fake negative reports. It has become more likely a buisness to earn money whereas on contrary, there are doctors who are very serious and devoted towards their profession and work day and night to save life of people. Rich people are visiting tourist places during such outbreak and going for small tours even when government is requesting everyone to step out only if it's necessary. This is showing the superiority and enablity of luxury affecting others in coming time. We need to learn from other countries who have effectively combat the disease and is successfully being corona free. What they teaches us is that proactive testing and tracing, along with the mass production, distribution and promotion of face masks and sanitizers are essential measures besides social distancing.
The government and citizens should get aligned in order to fight against covid-19 pandemic and dispute between the parties should be kept aside for a while. Our prime concern and sole objective is to prevent the spread of the virus, a full lockdown seems to be an effective solution but it has significant economic consequences as most commercial activity comes to a halt. There are few things which we can do like giving financial help in the form of money, groceries, donating medical equipments over the counter medicines to the people who lost their livelihood and are living in bankruptcy. We can amplify the needs through social media by helping them find medicines and oxygen cylinders. Also we can help others by being plasma donors, if recently recovered from covid-19 and by advising them to not panic and get themselves tested and vaccinated in time to prevent the spread of disease and should strictly follow the guidelines given by government in order to protect themselves and the people who are getting in contact to them. Remember, you are beautiful but wear a mask all the time. You are free spirited but stay at home. The second wave of covid-19 and lockdown has frustrated us but all this is happening because of our negligence and recklessness so let's get serious, united and be free spirited again. Here's hoping that we'll come out of this pandemic safe and healthy!
