Two seals rescued by Marine mammal stranding center on Monday
Even in this hard time of Coronavirus pandemic, Marine Mammal Stranding Centers are working to rescue the mammals on all the beaches in Jersey. On Monday, two seals from Brigantine's MMSC were released from Sandy Hook Park in North Jersey's Gateway National Recreation Area. One of the seals was a 300-pound male harp, and the other was a female grey seal pup. MMSC Founding Director Bob Schoelkopf told us that the harp seal was rescued around two months ago. And the female seal was only for 48 hours in the facility and was a "relocation" from neighboring Longport in South Jersey. Usually, seals travel a 1,500 miles distance to reach New Jersey from Artic, and as the journey is dangerous, some of them become stranded. In March and April, MMSC had received over two hundred calls for stranded animals and had encountered at least six adult seals in New Jersey alone. Even though beaches are closed in New Jersey due to epidemic, some ignorant people come to the beaches, which makes the rescue extra tricky. MMSC is a non-profit organization and heavily relies on donations. Due to pandemic, they had also suffered financially. To report a stranding animal, call the MMSC hotline at 609-266-0538. Schoelkopf suggests to please call them instead of rescuing the animals yourself.
Mayor Kenney to announce new budget on May 1 seeing crisis due to Coronavirus
The municipal budget was a much-awaited event this year, and public and even Mayor Jim Kenney was eagerly waiting for it as it was supposed to bring a lot of new services and facilities. Some announcements in the budget were related to new money for schools and the city community college, improving energy efficiency, street sweeping, and adding a HazMat squad to the fire department. But these were all planned last month before Coronavirus had arrived. Now, according to a review from Controller's office on City finances, the city funds had dropped from $650 million to $350 million, which completely changed the plans for the expenditure. The crisis is so massive that Kenney had to propose a new budget on May 1 after his first budget on March 10.
According to the report by Controller Rebecca Rhynhart, the revenue decline is due to loss of wage and sales taxes due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Kenney avoided saying anything about the new budget on Tuesday till he presents it to City Council May 1. Here are some ways he could trim the budget and increase revenue to fill the gape.
- May reduce the current administrative expenditure and trim employee payoffs.
- Reduce services like Garbage Collection, Close Buildings like Libraries, and firehouses.
- Increase taxes to increase revenue input.
- Empty 'Rainy Day' Accounts & Pray for Help
