Coronavirus Pandemic: The Challenges in Philadelphia
Coronavirus Pandemic: The Challenges in Testing
The city of Philadelphia is facing major challenges in containing the coronavirus pandemic. Testing for the virus has become a herculean task due to infrastructural inadequacies. The drive-thru testing sites for Covid-19 , set up after a week's worth of planning by hospital systems and country health agencies , are no longer useful in containing the pandemic. This has happened due to the shortage of test kits and delays in receiving lab results. Experts believe that such shortcomings have diminished the role of widespread testing.
Nevertheless, testing is still very valuable in preventing the contagion, the focus being on the already hospitalized, the first responders and the health care workers, as noted by the experts. In lieu of testing, a broader strategy of promotion of self-isolation and sanitary rituals is most likely to be implemented.
Another aspect of reconsideration of testing strategy is that the test results reflect the spread that happened about 12 days ago. This lag in collection of samples and reporting of results is observed owing to the centralized, overloaded infrastructure. Hence, testing has been termed a failure. The experts have, thus, urged the public to practice social distancing and good sanitation practices.
