Audit: $40K spent by University president in a policy violation
More than $40,000 were paid by Northern Arizona University for the travel expenses of President Rita Cheng and her husband. These expenses didn't comply with the policies of the university, as per a state audit.
In a report released on Friday, the Arizona Auditor General cited that Cheng spent $30,000+ on airplane tickets, both business- and first-class, to Russia last year. This also included the additional replacement tickets.
The trip was done to meet the officials of the university and government such as the U.S. ambassador to Russia. However, it was not revealed what the trip was for.
The college didn't pursue travel arrangements built up by the Arizona Board of Regents or the Flagstaff college and put open cash in danger, the report said.
Wendy Swartz, associate vice president for the NAU Comptroller's Office, said: "At no time were public monies at risk of misuse in our review ." Further, a need of additional training is demonstrated by the report.
The Northern Arizona University Foundation repaid the college $37,785 to cover the airfare to Russia, Tom Cheng's airfare to Israel, Russian visas, early registration expenses, valet stopping and room administration after the college found the consequences of the review in November, college authorities said.
