Students to get relief in loans: Corona stimulus bill
As the pandemic threatened economic stability, Congress passed a $2 trillion relief bill, which President Donald Trump was quick to sign. The bill provides relief to borrowers of student loans by freezing interest and suspending payments until at least Sept 30. The bill includes the following :
Loans eligible for suspension
Loans eligible for suspension are only those held by U.S. Department of Education.
Whether your loan is held by the department can be checked at StudentAid.gov. But if the loan is provided by a private student loan servicer, the bill doesn’t cover it. Although the servicer may alternatively provide accommodation or some payment plan.
Know how your loan and balance will be affected
The balance amount isn’t being written off, although interest is frozen but one has to pay for a longer period. If one was in default before the suspension, the default shall subsist once suspension ends. Balance payment cycle and financial health
We don’t know until when this crisis shall last and what it shall cost. When the suspension is over, people shall still be recovering and same goes for the economy. Considering where a person stands in life and financial stability, money must be redirected for savings and other plans.
Be aware
Be cautious of your money and payments. Take as much information from servicers as possible so that payments aren’t automated and debited while you miss out on grace periods and reliefs.

Abbott coronavirus test could deliver results in 15 minutes, approved by FDA
Abbott Laboratories has developed a coronavirus testing method that can deliver accurate results within 15 minutes. The Federal health officials, on Friday, approved the test. This could accelerate testing in the US, said Vice President Mike Pence. The US Food and Drug Administration authorized the test for emergency use. The test maker to begin testing next week expects to deliver 50,000 tests per day. The whole testing kit platform used to conduct the testing entirely weighs less than 5 pounds, hence can be installed where the testing is needed most. Last week, the FDA had approved another rapid test from diagnostics company Cepheid, which claims to provide the results in around 45 mins. Many other tests take anywhere between a few hours to days to get results. However, there is a critical shortage of supplies needed to collect specimens from patients and health care facilities with all FDA-approved tests. But in some places, like New York City, health officials have said that patients with a coronavirus-like illness should stay home, saying that is "safer for the patients and health care workers" and doesn't change the treatment patients receive. The regulators are satisfied with the validation data from the test and believe that there are risks in this testing.
LAUSD schools will be closed till May 1 due to the COVID-19 outbreak
The schools that fall within the Los Angeles Unified School District, shall not be back in session up till May 1, due to the measures taken to control the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Superintendent Austin Beutner announced the same in a letter sent to the parents within the district, on Monday morning.
Beutner reports that about half of the students continue to learn at the same rate as they were whilst attending school. A quarter is doing just fine, but the rest of them are not even receiving the proper opportunity to learn.
So, as an initiative to narrow down that gap, he has announced a $100 million emergency investment for providing required devices and free internet access. This shall be done in partnership with Verizon, for all students of LAUSD who don’t have access to these facilities.
Several families cannot afford to make such arrangements but their children deserve the same privileges received by others, he added.
The prolonged school closure has also raised questions about the graduating class of 2020. Beautner clarified in a press conference that measures shall be taken to make the students ready for the next stage of life and to celebrate their accomplishments.

Worldwide count of positive coronavirus cases peaks to 600,000 on Saturday. Most new cases come from Europe and the US. This landmark came just two days after reaching half-a-million. The global count of deaths due to this virus is over 28,000. Europe has implemented lockdown, emptying streets, including Paris where drone photos showed the city's landmarks nearly deserted. Merkel's chief, Helge Braun said, the authorities closed non-essential shops and banned public social gatherings. Spain, which has been following stay-at-home restrictions, reported 832 more deaths, making a total of 5,690 and total positive cases reach 72,000. The medical staff are in exhausting conditions, falling ill for working non-stop. And, nearly 9,000 health workers have been infected. The average age of the patients is around 30-40 years, said an ambulance medic of Barcelona's Dos de Maig Hospital. For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. But for others, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, the virus can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and lead to death.
