During pandemic, local woman helping NICU babies feel closer to parents
The pandemic caused due to COVID-19 has caused people to maintain a social distance, but they have found various ways to connect. One such peculiar way to connect was located in Tulsa, where people are sending scent clothes to TULSA hospitals so that the babies in NICU can be comforted.
Nurse Shandel Hubbard described scented cloths as the material wore by the parents she further said that the babies were placing the scented clothes and it was observed that the babies could calm as the smell of these clothes make them feel as if their parents are present near them. A baby's sense of smell is the strongest of the five senses.
Hubbard described the importance of scented cloths by saying that in this pandemic of COVID-19 scented materials can be used to comfort babies as direct involvement of parents is not practically possible, keeping in mind the health guidelines. She further asked for more scented clothes on her Facebook account by saying that the cloths can be of any shape provided that they are less than six by six, cotton or fleece no silk.

Max Hailperin is a resident of Minneapolis and had set a mission to walk all 87 neighborhoods of Minneapolis since his retirement. He lived in Linden Hills and had retired from teaching at Gustavus Adolphus College. He started his mission named "All of Minneapolis" in 2016. He told us that this would keep him active and encourage others to explore their neighborhood. He had to stop his mission due to COVID-19, but Hailperin planned to walk five to eight miles at a time to all the city's neighborhoods alphabetically. After each walk, he updates his blog on his website (allofminneapolis.com) with photos, interesting observations, and historical context of places. His posts have colorful photos of exciting homes, local food , public arts, and parks to encourage others to go out and walk. Hailperin is a very organized person and keeps track of the routes on google maps he takes so that he does not repeat the same street if he doesn't want to.
Hailperin usually walks alone, but sometimes get the companionship of strangers on the way. One such stranger is Dee Tvedt, a retired catalog librarian who lives in Stevens Square. They had walked together many times, and Tvedt told us that Hailperin made him travel some new streets and discover new things. In his blogs, Hailperin writes about the different varieties of houses that exist in one block. Now he is taking shorter walks to his neighborhood only. The decor and architecture of Linden Hills' amaze him.
Turn streets into slow streets for public health and check the spread of Corona
On March 16, Bay area counties issued an order named shelter-in-place that is an emergency measure to avoid the spread of Coronavirus. This order involves closure of non-essential businesses, and residents are asked to stay at their home and practice social distancing. These measures have succeeded in many regions. Our local elected officials deserve n appreciation for their quick decisions.
Now is the time for mayors to take decisive action of designating hundreds of miles of "slow streets."
Slow streets are ordinary streets that have been closed to through traffic with signs and traffic cones at each intersection. (Residents can still drive to and from their homes). On these slow streets, Bay area residents can walk, jog, or roll wheelchairs on the traffic lane. These lanes also provide enough space for the people to maintain social distancing. Due to COVID-19, the number of cars on the road had decreased significantly, reducing the number of accidents and pedestrian fatalities to almost zero in the Bay Area.
As the transport services had reduced, these slow streets can help essential workers to walk and bike to their jobs safely. Cities like San Jose, San Francisco and Los Angeles have already had great success with temporary street closures with programs like Viva CalleSJ, Sunday Streets, and CicLAvia, respectively. Now, these programs should be taken to a grand scale and not just on the weekend. These slow roads can also help people to keep themselves fit and healthy by walking and running and avoiding any chronic diseases due to obesity.
